In-house capacity building training for local radio stations

Nepal forum of environmental Journalists (NEFEJ) organized a one day radio journalists’ capacity building in reporting environment and watershed issues at the respective radio stations. The main objectives of this training was tocapacitate local radio stations to developthe radio magazine program on environment and watershed issues. Specific objectives includes 1. Capacitate journalists from the partner stations toproduce regular radio magazine with issue based reports, news and other program items on the issues of environment and watershed conservation, 2. Inform journalists about several issues related to environment including water and disasters and support in overall understanding on environmental issues and to improve their response expressed through programs, news bulletin and other platform. In order to deliver the afore mentioned objectives, training module was developed based on the need assessment of radio station.

Before mobilizing the trainers to the field, NEFEJconducted a short rapid stations capacity assessment in raising environment and watershed issues of selected radio stations among NEFEJ partner radios. Selected radio stations include Radio Darchula, Radio Shuklaphanta, Radio Tikapur, Radio Ramaroshan, Radio Nepali Aawaz and radio NariAawaz located in-between Karnali and Mahakali River from Kailali to Jumla district. A total of 52 radio staffs from 6 radio stations participated in the training. Among them 17 were female and 35 were male. At the end of the each training, participants showed commitment to produce environmental and watershed related issues regularly.
