NEFEJ widens the scope of media monitoring

  • Published Date : July 7, 2019

NEFEJ launched media monitoring project in 2018. This monitoring aims to dig out the qualitative and quantitative aspects of environmental news published in major daily newspapers.

In previous year, our monitoring was confined within the broadsheet newspaper publishing from Kathmandu.  This year, four national dailies from central; and one local daily from each province were selected with a purpose of broadening our research scope and area. The purpose of research was to recognize trend and patterns of news.

Out of four national daily newspapers, three are vernacular dallies i.e Gorkhapatra, Kantipur and Nagarik. Remaining one is The Himalayan Times English daily. Likewise, the local newspapers named Blast Daily, Janakpur Today, Samadhan Daily, Butwal Today, Anumodan Daily were selected from Provinces 1, 2, 4, 5 and 7 respectively. These newspapers were selected depending upon their high popularity among the readers and diverse areas of news coverage.

Unlike previous report, some more fields were added to the existing news category that has greater influence on environmental issues. This monitoring is expected to help to find out the issues relating to environment such as pollutions, effects of climate change and other development issues across the country. People who are not aware about the environmental news are being able to at least know the fact of our country through news.
